State Band Festival Success

RASWA Brass had a very successful weekend at the State Band Festival 2017 which was held over the June long weekend. Being the only A Grade Brass Band in the state, we had no one competing in our grade but still required sufficient marks to be awarded the A Grade Open Brass Trophy. Congratulations to Ben Noonan on Principal Cornet who was awarded the Norm Snow Trophy for best soloist within a brass band.

Hymn: Jerusalem 45/50 (Parry arr Lourens)
Test Piece: Rococo Variations (Gregson) 94/100
March: Viva Birkenshaw (Rimmer) 43/50

On Monday, a number of soloists performed in the solo and party competition. Congratulations to Ben MacDonald on being awarded the Junior Brass Solo Award.  Not content with just one solo prize over the weekend, Ben Noonan took out another solo award, the A Grade Brass Solo Prize with RASWA Brass players taking out the top four places.

Ben Noonan (Cornet) 96
Sarah Draper (Tenor horn) 95
Justin Freeman (Euphonium) 92
Glyn MacDonald (Trombone) 91

Mike Willett was awarded the Allan Conroy Memorial Trophy as WA Bands-person of the year. Mike’s 30 year contribution to the band and to banding in WA was recognised in front of a packed audience and presented by Allison Conroy. Mike has been a tireless worker and great musical contributor to the band over many years and was a very worthy recipient of this award. Congratulations to Mike.

Cruise Ship Welcome

At 7 am on Tuesday 6 December, RASWA Brass were on the balcony of the Fremantle Passenger Terminal to welcome the newest and biggest cruise ship to Australian waters. The Ovation of the Seas was on it’s maiden voyage to Australia and the band was in the middle of all the action. 11 stories of balconies overlooking the band, the floating hotel gave us an instant audience. Passengers disembarked over the gangplank dancing away to our PLS charts. What a great way to start the day! The band can be heard and seen on the two pages below.

Royal Show week brings out the RASWA Brass Rock Stars!

It’s our half way mark of the Royal Show Week 2016 and we have been entertaining the crowds nightly at the “Taste WA” stage before moving down to the main area.

Who said brass band players can’t be rock stars! From Bon Jovi and ACDC through to Tom Jones and Michael Buble. We do it all!

With the cold conditions and bitter wind, we are very pleased that we have avoided getting drenched so far this year. But with four nights to go, anything can happen!
